I was engrossed in this novel by Emily Eden. There is a lot of humour and long conversation between the main scenes, and I was tempted to skim them. But carefully reading them explains the rest of the stunners in the book. It's written so that you feel like a guest in the room as each scene plays out. It's not hard to imagine the garden party, the quarrels and the snubs as they come to life. Helen and Teviot's relationship - though set so long ago, has NOT changed in modern times. Together they learned that marriage isn't being emotionally selfish, or an open house for endearing, but nosy, homewrecking best friends. If you read this book, it will save you some $$$ in marriage counselling. Sometimes people like Teviot need to get knocked 'upside the head' to get it right.Product details

A really good book on ththe semie. Way of life years ago. Woven into a good love story of the life of the wealthy and titled.
Enjoyed this book very much. Kept me interested till the end. Loved the way the English language was once used. I'll read whatever else Emily Eden writes.
I enjoyed this book, written in the 1800's, about the time period of the Jane Austen novels. While Eden is no Austen, it was still fun to read.
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were very well-described and often amusing. The story itself was well-told and poignant. I recommend this to anyone interested in literature from this period.
I grabbed this out of curiosity when it was on a free promotion, and I'm so glad I did.
Whether you feel the novel is in the tradition of Austen or not (at least one reviewer was disappointed that the comparison didn't hold true for her), The Semi-Attached Couple stands well on its own. When I consider it was written in 1830, I'm amazed at how easily accessible the language is.
The novel is more than a tale of a couple who married before they could really understand or appreciate one another. It is a commentary on the uncertainty of happiness in marriage when the process by which marriages were arranged was so faulty. It also provides a hilarious look at the indolent lifestyle of the wealthy class, and the voting process in a country setting during the time period. And the comparison to Austen is relevant when considering several of the novel's characters, especially Lady Portmore and Mrs. Douglas, whose foibles and utter lack of self-knowledge compare to any number of Austen characters (Mrs. Elton, Mrs. Norris, Lady Susan, Sir Walter Elliot.)
The title is obscure in 2015, but was well-chosen in 1860. Emily Eden had published The Semi-Detached House in 1859, and based on how well that novel was received, she dusted off this novel, written 30 years prior, and gave it a title designed to attract readers of The Semi-Detached House. I am looking forward to reading SDH next, though I had no idea what a semi-detached house was (in the US, they're probably better known as duplexes. I had no idea they were built so long ago! And a google image search is most instructive; the British "duplexes" from that era look delightful.)
If you enjoy comedies of manners, love Austen, want a HEA, and do not expect the impossible (this is not an Austen clone) I heartily recommend this novel.
I loved this book. It's like a pulp fiction version of Jane Austen. It's really funny. My only problem was with jumping ahead to the review at the end so I couldn't read the last page. Also there are a lot of glaring transcription errors.
Loved the antique locutions, "did you give it me" but a human proofreader could have stopped some egregious errors in spelling and wording AU for all comes to mind vox for vex the errors were too numerous and intrusive. One engaged proofreader would have caught all the errors! Otherwise a fun little excursion into a time past.
